“I have been battling Lyme disease for over 4 years. This is a grossly misdiagnosed, misunderstood and mistreated disease by many in the medical field. As a result, it is a lengthy, grueling and costly process to get on the road to recovery.”
For thousands of others like Keren, the road to Lyme disease diagnosis can often times, leave one feeling hopeless that their condition will ever find relief.
What Is Lyme Disease?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks.
What Are The Symptoms Of Lyme Disease?
Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system.
How Many People Have Lyme Disease?
Recent estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that more than 300,000 Americans are diagnosed each year with Lyme disease.
Which States Are Most Prominent For Lyme Disease Cases?
A new report that was published by the clinical laboratory Quest Diagnostics has shown that Lyme disease cases has now spread to all 50 states plus the District of Columbia.
In the report, Quest Diagnostics analyzed the results of 6 million blood tests doctors had ordered to diagnose Lyme disease in their patients. The results revealed that Pennsylvania had the most positive cases. Coupled with the 6 New England states, they made up nearly 60% of the country’s Lyme disease cases.
Is There A Cure For Lyme Disease?
Like all diseases, detecting and diagnosing Lyme disease in early stages is critical. Patients who are diagnosed in these stages can be treated with antibiotics which usually lead to rapid and complete recovery.
However, as we learned from Keren earlier, Lyme disease can be a grossly misdiagnosed, misunderstood and mistreated disease by many in the medical field. In this, for many, by the time a diagnosis is made, damage can already be done.
How Is Lyme Disease Transmitted?
The spread of the Lyme disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, begins when a person is bitten by infected ticks. These ticks differ depending on what part of the United States you are in.
The black-legged tick, or deer tick, spreads the disease in northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States where nearly 95% of the US Lyme disease cases are reported. The western blacklegged tick is found spreading the disease on the Pacific Coast.
But, regardless of where one contracts Lyme disease, one thing remains the same. The road to diagnosis and treatment can be a long and lonely road.
