Avril Lavigne is on mission.
It’s been five long years since the Canadian pop-rock artist last released a new album. On September 19, Lavigne, who has sold over 40 million albums worldwide, will release her new single “Head Above Water” which will be off her forthcoming album.
In December 2014, Avril was diagnosed with Lyme disease, and with this release, she is on mission to share her story and to raise awareness for the disease that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 300,000 people in America alone, are diagnosed with the tick-borne disease each year.
In a letter penned to her fans, Lavigne writes, “I’m so excited to finally be able to announce the first single off my new album along with its release date. Five years have gone by since I released my last album. I spent the last few years at home sick fighting Lyme Disease. Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly. Truly… by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive.”
In Lavigne’s native Canada, the amount of annual Lyme disease cases has increased over the last decade. In Avril’s home province of Ontario, along with Québec and Nova Scotia, the three-combined accounted for 88% of the confirmed cases in 2016 alone.
Avril Lavigne Tells Her Lyme Story
In sharing an open letter with her fans, the pop-rock artist discusses opening up about her battle with Lyme disease, “I have decided to be truthful about my struggle, open and more vulnerable than ever before. And to be honest, part of me doesn’t want to talk about being sick because I want it to all be behind me, but I know I have to. Because not only is it a part of my life, I need to bring awareness to the severity of Lyme Disease.”
Avril Lavigne Releases New Song
On September 19, Avril will release her new single from her forthcoming album. The single is called Head Above Water and for those who are fighting Lyme disease every day, this song hits home. In discussing the new single, Lavigne writes, “It is also the first song I wrote from my bed during one of the scariest moments of my life. I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down. I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe. Praying to God for Him to help me just keep my head above the water. To help me see through the stormy weather. I grew closer to Him. My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story.”
From Head Above Water,
“Yeah, my life is what I’m fighting for, can’t part the sea, can’t reach the shore. And my voice becomes the driving force, I won’t let this pull me overboard. God, keep my head above water, don’t let me drown. ”
You can also listen to the new song, which releases at 12PT on September 19th, here.
With her first new album releasing after 5 years, Avril Lavigne is on mission beyond the music. With her foundation, she aims to make a lasting difference in the fight against Lyme disease.
Avril Lavigne Foundation And Lyme Disease
In talking about The Avril Lavigne Foundation and its focus on Lyme disease, the artist states, “My Foundation wants to be sure that doesn’t happen as often as it does, so on our website, we’re now providing Lyme prevention resources, and links so you can connect with Lyme Literate doctors (that have learned how to correctly diagnose this disease and provide treatment as quickly as possible). Soon we’ll be announcing an alliance with top scientific teams that will accelerate Lyme research. And we’re about to launch an initiative that YOU can help us with – so that together, we can help more individuals affected by Lyme Disease get the treatment they desperately need to come out the other side of this insidious disease.”
ASAP And Lyme Disease
As a specialty pharmacy that seeks to go beyond the prescription, we are inspired by the strength, courage, and vulnerability that Avril Lavigne has shown in being willing to be a voice for so many. For the many, it can be a long journey of unanswered questions before diagnosis. But often times, that’s only the beginning. At ASAP, Lyme patients aren’t numbers, they’re heartbeats with families, futures, and so much purpose.
How ASAP Helps Lyme Patients
We recently received a letter from Ashley. A professional photographer, Ashley had been diagnosed with Lyme disease. And is the case for many Lyme patients, it was life altering. Being thrust into the throes of any disease can be overwhelming. Not only is it difficult to process the reality of disease diagnosis, but also, for many, navigating the regiment of treatment and costs, can be too much to handle.
In her own words, Ashley shares how ASAP played a part in her journey battling Lyme disease, “I was diagnosed with Lyme Bartonella and Anaplasmosis and began IV therapy in May of 2015. ASAP has gone above and beyond to help me recover, conveniently assisting my at home treatment. Their customer service is second to none, they have visited me personally and have made themselves available to all my questions. Responding promptly to my calls and texts, they have shipped my supplies quickly, often overnight to meet my antibiotic schedule. They are able to expertly handle my questions and provide a typed schedule outlining my infusions.
ASAP helps anticipate supplies I will need to have on hand, like extra saline flushes for the weekends. In addition, they have helped me find alternative supplies. For instance, I had an allergic reaction to a dressing at the beginning so they researched different brands and found one that works incredibly.
Understanding insurance coding extremely well, they handle the financial aspect exceptionally, so that costs are kept to a minimum. From the pharmaceutical aspect, they give expert advice about preventing drug interactions. For example, they instructed me to separately administer my two prescriptions on opposite days to help minimize an interaction per the orders they received.
On a personal note, they send sweet notes to encourage me. Every few weeks, ASAP checks in to make sure I am fully covered with supplies. From the first in person visit to all of the phone calls, ASAP has surpassed my expectations for care.”

Avril Lavigne Is Making A Difference Beyond The Music
Avril Lavigne is concerned too, and in this, she is making a difference beyond the music. In further discussing the work of her foundation, Lavigne concludes, “We directly impact the lives of individuals and families affected by Lyme through treatment grants administered by our charitable partners; and we’ve recently created an alliance to accelerate scientific research. All proceeds raised through our initiatives enable us to expand the number of lives we’re able to transform.”
