At ASAP, we love doing whatever we can to go beyond the prescription. It’s who we are and who we’ve always aimed to be since first opening our doors back in 2001. But, do you know what else we love? Giving back.
Recently, Jennifer Otto and Gilbert Russell of ASAP paid a visit to an incredible non-profit in Chicago that is making a huge difference in the lives of children who live in high-risk, inner-city neighborhoods. What started with 16 kids has now grown to over 1,500 today. Simply put, the work of By The Hand Club For Kids is not only something special to behold, but also, it is something that is making a lasting impact, too.
We invite you to take a few moments and read on as we introduce you to our dear friends at By The Hand Club For Kids. ASAP is a proud supporter of the incredibly vital work they are doing every single day. The following is just a mere snapshot taken from their website. Please read and then see the rest of their story by visiting them online at bythehand.org.
OVER A DECADE OF LOVING KIDS—MIND, BODY AND SOUL
By The Hand Club For Kids began as a pilot program of The Moody Church. Soon after, By The Hand relocated to be in the heart of Cabrini-Green, at that time one of the nation’s largest housing projects and home to thousands of kids. Now, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is separate from The Moody Church, By The Hand is serving kids from four of Chicago’s most under-resourced communities.
REACHING KIDS WHO ARE IN CRITICAL NEED OF INTERVENTION
By The Hand is committed to serving children from the most under-resourced, dangerous neighborhoods. We work closely with school principals to identify those who are most likely to drop out—those who are failing and in critical need of intervention. Typically, they are not meeting reading standards and they often have significant hardships that require special attention to overcome. It is our vision to help each one of these children experience abundant and everlasting life.
HELPING THE MOST UNLIKELY KIDS EXPERIENCE EXTRAORDINARY TRANSFORMATION
By The Hand began in 2001 with 16 children from Cabrini-Green. Since then, we have witnessed transformation within the lives of our kids—and as an organization. This year we are serving 1,523 kids from Cabrini-Green, Altgeld-Murray, Austin and Englewood. God willing, we will add other locations to serve nearly 2,000 kids by the year 2020, helping the lowest-performing kids from each neighborhood succeed in school—and life.
TAKING KIDS BY THE HAND
From the time they enroll in our program until they’re walking independently as well-adjusted, responsible adults, our mission is to literally and figuratively take our kids by the hand and walk alongside them. We tutor them to academic excellence. We mentor them to make wise, life-defining decisions. And we care for them as our own, meeting their basic nutritional and healthcare needs.
LOVING THE WHOLE CHILD—MIND, BODY AND SOUL
Ever since By The Hand began in 2001, we have always emphasized a holistic approach to child development. We begin by helping kids feel loved and significant by providing a safe learning environment during the most dangerous time of day—the after-school hours, when more crimes are committed by and against youth than any other time.
